National Diabetes Month facts and Life with Diabetes Infographic

Posted on Nov 18, 2013 by Maggie LaBarbera

I would be remiss if I did not say something about diabetes.

This month is National Diabetes Month.  Diabetes is something that I personally am very much aware of.  My father and paternal grandmother both suffered from diabetes Type II. I can also tell you as a critical care nurse, I took care of countless patients who suffered from diabetes.  Often they had been dealing with this disease for many years.  I saw them in ICU often blinded, newly amputated or in kidney failure (just to name a few of the diabetic-caused conditions I cared for).

We are also now seeing a rise in diabetes in our children (diabetes used to be rare in children but is now more common due to the increased child obesity population).

Total prevalence of diabetes

Total: 25.8 million children and adults in the United States—8.3% of the population—have diabetes.

Diagnosed: 18.8 million people

Undiagnosed: 7.0 million people

Prediabetes: 79 million people*

New Cases: 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in people aged 20 years and older in 2010.

Under 20 years of age

  • 215,000, or 0.26% of all people in this age group have diabetes
  • About 1 in every 400 children and adolescents has diabetes

This infographic was shared with me and I wanted to share it with you.  It is called ""Life with Diabetes"
