Have you had your garlic today?

Posted on Apr 04, 2014 by Maggie LaBarbera

This month is national Garlic Month.  garlic

Because most of us don't just "eat garlic" like you would a bell pepper or carrots, you might have forgotten that garlic is a vegetable.  Most of us eat garlic as part of foods that are enhanced/cooked with garlic to add better flavor.  It could be easy to put garlic in the "seasoning" category.

Garlic is a great seasoner but, it is also a vegetable.  And as a vegetable it gives our bodies healthy benefits.

Here are some of the health benefits of garlic:

  • reduces risk factors for cardiovascular disease
  • reduces risk factors for cancer
  • stimulates the immune system
  • helps detoxify your body
  • improves physical strength

Of course, fresh uncooked garlic will give you the greatest health benefits but studies have shown that cooked garlic still provides healthy benefits.

If you have not tried just roasting a garlic with a little salt and eating it, well what can I say, you haven't lived! I am a big garlic lover but of course, it can affect your breath so you may want to be selective on where you choose to eat a large amount of garlic!

Nourish Thought for the Day:

Add some chopped garlic to your cooking to spice up your meal and your heart!
