US Report Card Flunks Physical Activity and Kids

The goal is for children to have at least 1 hour a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day as well as reduce screen time to 2 hours or less a day. 

Nourish Thought for the Day:  

Small bouts of moderate to vigorous activity can easily add up to 60 minutes a day.

Physical activity is important* for children because it:

 

  • Increases health-related fitness 
  • Improves cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk profiles
  • Decreases risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood
  • Decreases risk of developing type 2 diabetes in childhood and adulthood 
  • Boosts bone health and development 
  • Improves  mental health and well-being
  • Improves cognitive and academic performance 
  • Betters motor control and physical functioning

Grades 

A;  We are succeeding with a large majority of children and youth

B;  We are succeeding with well over half of children and youth.

C:  We are succeeding with about half of children and youth.

D:  We are succeeding with less than half, but some, children and youth.

F:  We are succeeding with very few children and youth.

Incomplete. At the present time there is insufficient information available

to establish a grade.
