Clean out your refrigerator and keep the healthy fresh foods appealing

Posted on Mar 21, 2011 by Maggie LaBarbera

It is that time of the year where many of us are looking around the house and planning to do some spring cleaning.

One place that can alway use a little extra attention is the refrigerator.  Afterall, this is the place that stores the food and keeps it fresh.  It is also the place where food can easily have spilled.  Sometimes, we don't use all the produce in time and it can start to spoil and leak onto the shelf or draw.

These little spills can really start to make the refrigerator smell and that is not going to make all that wonderful healthy fresh food seem very appealing to kids or you!

So I thought I would pass on these easy tips on getting rid of odors in the refrigerator.

Afterall, our nose is part of what stimulates our appetite and makes food appealing or unappealing.

To Remove Odors from Refrigerators and Freezers

If the food has been there awhile, you may have to repeat.

  • Dispose of any spoiled or questionable food.
  • Remove shelves, crispers, and ice trays. Wash them thoroughly with hot water and detergent. Then rinse with a sanitizing solution (1 tablespoon unscented, liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of water).
  • Wash the interior of the refrigerator and freezer, including the door and gasket, with hot water and baking soda. Rinse with sanitizing solution as above.
  • Leave the door open for about 15 minutes to allow free air circulation.
