About Fiber

Fiber is an important part of a child's diet.  We know that most children do not eat enough fiber in their diet.

My Plate reminds us that a healthy plate has half of the grains section of the My Plate coming from 100% whole grain foods and half of the plate filled with fruits and vegetables that are usually higher in fiber.  But sometimes getting your child to eat higher fiber foods can be challenging.

Here is a list of helpful tips that will give you ideas on how to get your child to eat more high fiber foods
and give you suggestions on how to choose higher fiber foods

List of Tips To Help Kids Eat Meals Higher In Fiber

  1. Try leaving the peel on an apple for more fiber.
  2. Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables are a good source of fiber.
  3. Fiber needs water to work- make sure kids are staying hydrated.
  4. High fiber diets are great to help maintain or lose weight for the whole family.
  5. High fiber foods include beans, whole grain breads and fresh fruits and vegetables.
  6. Choose lean-meats and fat-free hot dogs on whole grain buns.
  7. Brown rice or whole-wheat pasta has more nutrients and fiber than their white counterparts. Replace white rice, bread and pasta with brown rice and whole grain products.
  8. Insoluable fiber helps your tummy working.
  9. Raspberries and blackberries have only have 60 calories in one cup and are both excellent sources of fiber.
  10. Soluable fiber helps lower your cholesterol.
  11. Eat at least two 100% whole-wheat food today such as pita bread or mini bagels.
  12. Look for whole grain cereals and breads with at least 4 gram of fiber
  13. Look for the words "100% whole" when buying whole wheat or whole grains
  14. Add fiber such as flax, wheat germ or whole grain cereal grains to recipes and dishes- for example add some to hamburgers before making patties, or add some to baked goods or top off yogurt with some ground flax or whole grain cereal-

Teach kids about fiber with our free nutrition printables-kids have fun learning about grains and fiber with 9 learning pages, word puzzles, and coloring activities!

Teaching kids to read food labels printable or online Food Label Game both are helpful for teaching kids to look for high fiber foods

Thanks a lot for great idea on child Nutrition in relation to parents. Parents plays a major role on the foods that a child should eat since they are more knowledgeable or at least should have ideas on it. If not managed well, the child might be obese or malnourished.
