First lady Michelle Obama promotes healthy foods to kids with new recipe contest
Posted on May 28, 2012 by Maggie LaBarbera
Our first lady is once again reaching out to children to encourage healthy eating.
A winner will be selected from each state and territory. All 56 winners of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge will attend a gala Kids’ “State Dinner,” that will be hosted by Mrs. Obama at the White House in August.
Winners will be flown out to Washington with airfare and hotel paid.
Here is what kids must do to win and represent their state:
Create an original lunch recipe that is healthy, affordable and tasty. The lunch must follow the USDA's nutrition guidelines. The child's lunch recipe can be a full plate made of the foods from the My Plate or it can be a dish that is made of the foods from the My Plate. The important piece is that the meal includes most of the food groups recommendations: vegetables, whole grains, protein, dairy and fruit.
Three finalists from each state will be chosen, and a grand tasting of final recipes will be held on June 20. Recipes will be judged based on
1. nutrition
2. taste
Points will be given for creativity and originality, for affordability, and for the “back story.” Each entry must include a few sentences about where the ideas for the dish came from.
