This is childhood awareness month and we wanted to share some important resources with you.
I know that when my sister was told that her child was obese, she felt overwhelmed and not sure what to do. She immediately thought that she should put her on a diet but of course, kids are growing and need nourishment. They can't just go on a diet especially one of the many fad diets that we adults frequent. A balanced meal high in nutrients and enough calories to ensure brain growth and function as well as building the thousands and thousands of new cells that are being produced to support growing bones, muscles, skin etc.
Often times, cutting down on the sugary treats, fruit juices and junk food while increasing activity will get them on the right path to a healthy weight. But changing habits are easier said than done. We all know that.
That is why changing habits by focusing on one or two goals at a time is best. You want your child to succeed and feel good about changing habits. And more importantly, they need the support of the family. No one wants to be singled out and made to feel different. The healthy habits they will be working on are the same that the whole family could benefit from. After all, weight is just one factor of your nutritional status. Many children who are at a normal weight are not eating healthy and denying their body of the nutrients they need to grow optimally.
Here are some articles that are designed to be easy to read (not too long!) and get tot the point of key actions you can implement.
If your child is extremely obese, you may need more help and structure to help your child lose weight. For example, a pediatrician or dietitian managed weight loss program designed for children.
