Celebrate National Fruits and Vegetables Month with Kids

Posted on Sep 11, 2013 by Maggie LaBarbera

September is such a busy with month with back to school.  It is also National Fruits and Vegetables month!  What a great way to combine healthy lunches back to school with a little fun reminder to children about the importance and tastiness of fresh fruits and vegetables.

This is key.  Making fruits and vegetables tasty.  Some parents may have the misconception that children must eat a certain type of vegetable, for example, broccoli.  If children don't like one type of vegetable, that is okay.  There are so many other green leafy vegetables to try.

Some parents may think that children just don't like vegetables all together.  But that could not be further from the truth.  There are so many studies that given the right circumstances, children actually enjoy fruits and vegetables.  If children don't like fruits and/or vegetables, find out what they don't like.  You may be surprised.
They could say it is too soft or too crunchy.  Or they don't like the color.  The great thing about fruits and vegetables is that they come in all different consistencies, colors and textures.

You can also make fruits and vegetables more interesting to children with a few minor adjustments to your table!  Often, adding dipping or grilling them on skewer will make them more interesting to children.  So don't give up if at first they refuse.  Patience and persistence are your friends.  Or giving your vegetable dish a funny name, Pass me the "X-Ray vision carrots" or "zany zucchinis".  You could also read them a story about Chef Solus' healthy adventures and then ask them "I wonder what Chef Solus would do?

And don't forget kids are watching and learning from you during mealtimes.  Show children how much you enjoy eating fresh fruits and vegetables!
