Guide To Helping Kids Understand Food Advertising

Maggie LaBarbera • RN, MBA • Jan 29, 2012

Fighting Food Advertising To Children - What Can Parents Do?

Start educating children about food marketing while they are young.  They are being exposed to advertising every day.  Did you know the average child can see about 5000 food advertisements each year?

Educate children about food advertising.  Help children understand the intent of commercials and ads they see every day.

Share with kids the different types of advertising media that is used to reach them.

Use specific food products advertisements and show how certain words, phrases and images are designed to make their foods seem attractive to children.

Talk about the nutritional value of food and how it affects a child's body.  Healthy foods help children feel better and gives them the fuel they need to do all their favorite activities.

Keeping Healthy Foods Fun and Positive!

We don’t want eating healthy foods to be associated with nagging. So keep your discussions positive. Keep healthy snacks on hand and avoid having chips, soda, and cookies in your pantry. It takes awhile to form habits and food associations. But consistency is key. Feed your child healthy, tasty foods regularly and your kids will start to crave and eat healthier foods on their own.
