We know kids don't get enough fruit and vegetables in their diet. Strawberries are a great source of vitamins and a great way to get kids eating fruit. There are so many different desserts you can make with it and naturally sweet.
Here are some healthy facts about this tasty fruit:
- fat free and sodium free
- only 50 calories for a full cup
- high in vitamin C, fiber, potassium and antioxidants
- they make healthy snacks for kids
Here are some buying tips for fresh delicious strawberries.
- Look for berries that are plump, firm and bright red.
- Size isn't important -- color and fragrance are best indicators of flavor.
- Strawberries don't ripen after they're harvested. Avoid buying berries with touches of green or white.
- Check the container for stains, which indicate they may be overripe.
- Don't wash berries until just before you're going to use them; otherwise, they'll get mushy.
- Don't trim caps off berries until after they're washed. Without the caps, they can get waterlogged and begin to lose their vitamin C.
- After purchasing, store in a shallow container on a paper towel in the refrigerator for up to three days.
- Serve them up at room temperature for best flavor.
