Tips for Making the Halloween Season Healthy and Active for Kids

Posted on Oct 04, 2010 by Maggie LaBarbera

Halloween is a great time for parties and trick-or-treating for children and grown-ups too. We get to dress up as our favorite super hero, enjoy Halloween parades and collect lots of treats along the way. It can also be a challenging time for parents who are trying to manage their child’s desire to eat all that candy!

We have put together a lots of fun ideas and Halloween theme nutrition printables: Alternatives to a high sugar Halloween Healthy Halloween printable activities for kids

Halloween is also a great time to enjoy being active. The cool weather that comes along with the fall season is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors as a family and be more active during the season.

  • Enjoy a nature walk with the kids- Take advantage of the beautiful foliage and collect orange, red and yellow leaves. Make a decorative wreath, a seasonal display, or paste leaves on construction paper to decorate the house.
  • During October visit a local pumpkin patch and pick your own pumpkins and gourds. Many pumpkin patch locations have other activities such as corn mazes, haunted houses, and hay rides. Pack up some sandwiches and spend the day!
  • Get moving- have kids help raking the autumn leaves, collect leaves to build your own scarecrow.
  • Join your kids and enjoy walking through the neighborhood or malls to look at Halloween decorations.
  • Set up a scavenger hunt in the yard- give children clues to find healthy treats or seasonal goodies you have hidden.
It is not hard to make Halloween a healthy and fun event with just a bit of planning.  Candy is part of Halloween but it does not have to be the only part of Halloween. The Autumn season offers so many wonderful opportunities for families to make healthy eating, nutrition and being active a priority.

There are many ways to have a 'sweet' and fun Halloween without all the sugar! We'll be sharing more fun and healthy seasonal ideas- from roasting pumpkin seeds and cooking seasonal food recipes with your kids to preparing for 'trick or treating' and managing your child's sugar intake.

Halloween actually offers you an excellent opportunity to teach your child about healthy eating, seasonal harvest foods and once-in-a-while treats. Teaching your child how to include a treat as part of their healthy eating plan, how much they can eat and when treats can be eaten all provide learning opportunities that help your child to establish healthy eating habits.

Hi, Nice article. I thought you might enjoy my song 'Healthy Halloween.' I'm offering it as a free download for the month of October to encourage eating healthy, creativity and having a good time instead of all the emphasis on candy. Locally, there are people who invest alot of time and energy into the growing of pumpkins, I mean we are talking some pumpkins with some serious weight! These pumpkins are like 500 - 600 pounds! Recently there was a pumpkin contest and there were some various events featured. I thought it was really cool that some of the HUGE pumpkins were hollowed out and used in a pumpkin boat race! That was so cool to see!
