Level 7: Learning about the Activity and Energy

 Food Pyramid Calories and Activity:

 

In the final level, the character travels through the Calories and Activity section of the pyramid whilelearning about the importance of the being active and burning calories (energy), how to create a balanced meal, select a healthy snack and maneuver through the game using keyboard and mouse skills.
 
 
Required Tasks
To complete the level, students must travel through
the Energy Underworld and:
• Find all nine information stations
• Create a three balanced meals
• Select healthy snacks
• Complete three puzzles
• Complete one cooking assignment
• Dodge worms, steam blasts, candy striped
mummies, flying bats, jumping frogs and floating
globs, energy wall and sugary goo.
 
 
Key Game Information and Nutrition Concepts the student will learn in the Calories and
Activity Level:
1. Energy Wall
The thing on the left is the energy wall. It chases you through the pyramid. Don’t let it
touch you or it will drain your energy.
 
2. Calories
Food gives you calories. Calories give your body energy.
 
3. Exercise
Exercise burns calories and helps you grow.
 
4. Sugary Goo
Watch out for puddles of sticky sugar goo. Getting stuck in one will slow you down.
 
5. Balanced Diet
It's best to get your calories from a balanced diet.
 
6. Storing Calories
If you don't burn through the energy your body will store it.
 
 
Materials needed for nutrition lesson:
Computer and Internet access, the latest Flash and Shockwave players installed, download free from Adobe
 
 
Teaching Tips:

Have the student review the Steps on the Interactive Food Pyramid.

 

Procedure:
  1. Hand out the Activity informational sheet to the class.
  2. Review the different types of activities, benefits of the activity and exercise and what activites fall into the Exercise group.
  3. Have the students make a list of their favorite activities and  see how they fit into one of the follow categories: the Sedentary, Low, Medium and High Activity. For younger students have them list activities that are moving their bodies and activites in which their bodies do not move.
  4. Guide the students to Chef Solus and the Food Pyramid Adventure Game.  They will need to log in.  They will start at level seven  in the Activity and Caloriess Section of the Food Pyramid where they will learn about the Activity and Caloriess Group and learn healthy message about it.
  5.  
Assessment:
Have the kids take the post test at the end of the level.  You will be able to see their scores if you want by clicking on their name in the table on your class' login screen.  
Provide them with the Activity And Exercise Activity Sheet for an in class activity or a homework assignment.
 
Optional:  
Print and distribute the food pyramid themed certificates of completion for Level 7.  Kids can also log in at home and print their own certificate which is available on their log in page.
Send home Parents Handouts for Level 7 with at home activities to reinforce the key messages the child has just learned playing level 7 of the Chef Solus and the Food Pyramid Adventure Game.
