The Matching Meals Game:
This is an online memory game with 3 different levels: easy, tricky and hard, each with a corresponding time limit.
-
The Easy level has 12 cards and a 45 second time limit.
-
The Tricky level has 20 cards and a 1:15 min time limit.
-
The Hard level has 30 cards and a 1:30 min time limit.
-
Each of the cards is colored to match a food group and feature a food from that group on the card.
-
The picture revealed when the pairs are matched provides a healthy message about food groups.
Using their mouse, the child clicks on a card the back of a card. The card turns over and reveals a picture of a food and the corresponding food group to which it belongs. When matching images appear on the two cards that flipped over at the same time, the cards disappear and show the picture underneath.

Teaching Tips:
Procedure:
-
Discuss why it is important to have a balance of all of the food groups in one’s diet and that eating a balanced diet can be delicious and fun, too!
-
Guide the students to Matching Meals and the appropriate number of memory cards.
-
Each time the child plays, the images on the cards and the secret image revealed changes, so they can guess what the food group message that appears will be as the image is revealed.
Assessment:
Grades 1 – 2:
Present two food options, one healthy and one not so healthy – example: a cookie and an apple. Have them choose which food would be a better nutritional snack and what food group that snack is from.
Grades 3 to 5:
Present two meals, one balanced with something from each food group, and one that is not balanced. Have the students choose which one would be a better meal and identify what food group each part of the balanced meal belongs.
