Teaching Tips:
Review the definition of the word “Food Pyramid” in the Nutrition Dictionary

Procedure:
The Interactive Food Pyramid is a wonderful introduction to the topic of nutrition and the 5 Food Groups. The Interactive Food Pyramid can be used as a reference, too, during any lesson about the 5 Food Groups.
  1. Ask the students if anyone knows about the 5 Food Groups.
  2. Ask if anyone thinks that they eat balanced meals, something from each of the food groups.
  3. Guide the students to the Interactive Food Pyramid to introduce them to the Food Pyramid and the 5 Food Groups.
Assessment:
Present the students with a selection of foods. Have the students organize the food by Food Group.
For older students, present the students with combination meals. Have the students break down the meals into the different food groups. Are they balanced meals? Why or why not?
